Flowers And Flea Markets

San Francisco Flea Market Style

Going from a freezing blizzard in NYC, to a more temperate Californian climate last Saturday, I am pleased that my vitamin D levels are steadily rising. So far San Francisco has been a lovely blur of vintage stores, coffee shops, rain, flea markets, vegan markets, steep hills and more coffee shops. So far my favorite vintage/eclectic goods store is Gravel & Gold. In addition to a funky mix of thick knit sweaters and hand painted leggings, the shop holds regular workshops (like potion making) and art shows, as well as supporting local artisans.

Last Sunday, my sister dragged me to one of the biggest flea markets I have ever seen called, Antiques by the Bay, to look for furniture. It was completely overwhelming and completely fun. Bargaining skills were essential and we went full force ahead until about noon when we stopped to wolf down a burrito at one of the food stands. Yum. We found a bench, three linen pillows, a nightstand and a sheepskin rug for the apartment, and I found a vintage coat with a mink collar for $20. We did pretty well! The flea market was enormous and after five hours of intense hunting and gathering, we called it a day.  That evening my sister and I went for tapas and cocktails at Beretta, in the mission. The baked polenta with gorgonzola cheese was my favorite and I had perhaps one too many, “Airmails”; a specialty cocktail made with rum, honey, lime and prosecco. Loving San Francisco.

Like A Virgin

In Jet-Set Hippie on February 6, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Suddenly flying and airports seem happy again. I am having my first experience on Virgin America at the moment, Wifii onboard! Over the past few years, flying has become my least favorite activity, even though my gypsy impulses for travel have never lessened. Just the idea of lines and security and delays makes me go crazy. I pined for the days when flying was chic, people dressed up and coach class was actually really nice; opposed to the blood-cot causing, non existent legroom, class of some airlines. Anyhow, my confidence is renewed now. I love the JFK terminal and Virgin America is my new favorite airline. Lots of legroom, water bottles and sexy black lights. Not to mention the happy place I’m in right now to be able to write this post, thousands of miles high in the sky!

Sweet Dreams

In Party Girl on February 4, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Though this dress is a bit over the top… I just love the whimsy and the romantic setting in the room. I think the gene to drool over wedding gowns is ingrained in all women… somewhere.. no matter how unromantic they may be, or how much they deny this urge. Prancing around in a dress is definitely one of the ways a girl can feel as feminine as possible.   A friend told me a story of how a woman she knows goes to ‘Black tie’ events, wearing a mans tuxedo. Quite chic and daring, but personally I would never forgo the opportunity to deck myself out in girly attire. At times, I  tell myself I am going to be super low maintenance and buy some simple jersey cloth frock off a rack for my wedding; yet,  some primal urge keeps me gravitating back to the fairytale puffball ballgown style. Perhaps I will land somewhere in the middle when I finally decide on the right dress.
